Keeping It Cool

North Myrtle Beach is a great place to relax while on vacation. We have a beautiful, clean, and wide beach strand perfect for all kinds of beach activities - from beach volleyball and bocce, to building sand castles, swimming, and surfing. It does get pretty hot on the beach strand; with temperatures clearing the mid-90's during our peak summer months. Use the following tips to stay cool on the beach, and you could enjoy several hours of fun in the Carolina sun.

Set up your beach chair at the water's edge so you can rest with your feet in the water. The combined ocean breezes and cool touch of the ocean will make you feel so relaxed and take away the effects of the hot air. I find this much more enjoyable than sweating bullets by setting up camp closer to the dunes.

If you desire to be closer to the dunes and want to stay dry, bring a cabana or a beach umbrella to the beach for some shade. The shade that's provided by a good umbrella or cabana will take care of the direct glare of the sun and reduce the temperature by 10 degrees at times. Cabanas are great for larger family groups who want to stay on the strand for several hours.

Stock a cooler with your favorite drinks and plenty of ice. An ice cold drink on the beach is a MUST, and keeps you hydrated while dramatically cooling you down. Keep in mind; glass containers are not allowed on our beach and you may be fined if you have glass bottles. You wouldn't want to step on broken glass would you?

Take a dip in the ocean! After a long period of time laying or playing in the sun, it sure feels great to go jump in the Atlantic. Ocean temperatures warm up to 85 degrees. Time spent in the ocean will give you plenty of added energy to enjoy the rest of your time on the beach strand.

Our last tip to stay cool in North Myrtle Beach: Have a water balloon fight on the beach! This is another great idea for family fun. Just make sure to pick up all the pieces of broken balloon after you're done. There are other people and wildlife that would like to enjoy our clean beach as well.

North Myrtle Beach Shopping

North Myrtle Beach keeps you busy with clean beaches, thrilling attractions, challenging golf, and some of the best seafood restaurants along the East Coast. Shopping is also very popular along the Grand Strand. Several malls, outdoor shopping complexes, and specialty shops attract millions of customers every season.

The beach’s newest shopping mall, Coastal Grand Mall, is located by the Myrtle Beach airport and is just a short drive south of Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. The modern, well-decorated atmosphere and name-brand retailers is sure to impress. Myrtle Beach Mall offers a similar assortment of shops and includes an on-site Bass Pro Shops store. It’s located south of Main Street, after Barefoot Landing as your driving south on Highway 17 from North Myrtle Beach. Both of these malls offer movie theaters and are a great place to visit on rainy, cloudy days.

Outdoor shopping complexes, such as the Tanger Outlets and Myrtle Beach’s Market Common, are popular in the spring, summer, and fall months. Over 100 name-brand stores, including Old Navy, Izod, Polo, and Reebok, can be found at the Tanger Outlets. The Market Common features popular brands and specialty shops in a unique urban setting just south of Coastal Grand Mall in Myrtle Beach. It also hosts one of the best movie theaters along the Grand Strand. Visit one of these outdoor shopping complexes after a day on the beach. You’ll find excellent dining options within walking distance.

If you find that you forgot your bathing suit or beach towel when you left for vacation, don’t worry! There are lots of beachwear stores that crowd North Myrtle Beach. Here is a good spot to find souvenirs of your vacation or a t-shirt for a friend back home. Beachwear stores are also a great place to find beach-related toys, frisbees, and rafts for use while you’re at the beach. They aren’t hard to find and are most likely walking distance from your beach house or condo.

Remember to save up a little money before your vacation if you plan to do some shopping. With exception of the beachwear stores, retail prices tend to be very competitive in town. Due to the spring and summer beach crowds, we advise you to do some research before hand, to see which shopping destination fits your desires better. Use the links throughout this blog post to visit a particular shopping center.

FYI: Beach Rules of North Myrtle Beach

March brings us beautiful weather after a few months of unusually chilly temperatures. The beaches are starting to fill out nicely with visitors from all over the world. Phone calls are starting to come in for people that want to come to North Myrtle Beach this spring. Stay ahead of the game and familiarize yourself with our beach rules and regulations before you come to the beach.

It is important to note a new law that came into effect at the start of the year. Cabanas are a great source of shade out in the hot sun. More and more people want to put up large shades, such as cabanas, to protect themselves and their family from the ultraviolet rays. Sometimes, these can interrupt emergency personal or crowd the beach so much that it makes the beach experience uncomfortable for others. Follow this link to read about the new law governing the use of beach tents and cabanas.

Most of the beach rules issued by the City of North Myrtle Beach are common sense and should be obeyed for the enjoyment of other vacationers and residents. Please direct any questions or concerns to the City, at (843) 280-5511. Ocean Drive Beach Rentals hopes you have a safe and enjoyable day out on the beach!
